Dialight announces major European order for LED traffic signals

Dialight to supply energy saving retro-fit LED traffic signals to the Turkish market.

Applied LED lighting technology specialist Dialight plc (LSE: DIA.L) today announced that it is to supply 20,000 of its state-of-the-art, central light source LED traffic signals to the Turkish market. Initial shipments have already commenced and will continue into 2010. While this order is substantial, it represents only a small percentage of the region’s installed base of traffic lights which represents a significant market opportunity for the Dialight Signals and Illumination business.

Offering up to ten years’ life expectancy, Dialight’s LED traffic signals deliver major savings for local authorities by reducing the need for expensive maintenance and avoiding the disruption to traffic that is inevitable with signal maintenance. Using less than 10 watts in comparison with the 50 watts used in signals by the average bulb, the LED units also significantly reduce power consumption and carbon emissions.

Dialight CEO, Roy Burton, comments: “I am delighted to announce yet another significant order for our central light source LED traffic signal products. This reinforces the clear message that our cutting edge LED technology is being accepted around the world for the immediate and long term value it can deliver.”

New 8W White LED Downlight with UL1598 and UL 844-Class I, Div 2 ratings

The RTO Series LED White Downlight is the newest member in Dialight’s state-of-the-art SafeSite® family of lighting products, utilizing high brightness LED technology to deliver savings in maintenance, energy consumption and CO2 emissions.

Farmingdale, NJ (December 7, 2009) - The new patent-pending SafeSite® RTO Series LED White Downlight from applied LED technology specialist, Dialight, is being introduced as a highly efficient alternative to incandescent jelly-jar fixtures commonly used in industrial and hazardous locations. The products are certified to meet UL1598 and UL 844 Class I Division 2 requirements.

With an ability to maintain 70% initial lumens over 60,000 hours of continuous operation, the LED Downlights offer significant savings to the user over incandescent lamps which only last up to 750 hours. This long lifespan greatly reduces employee/production down-time previously caused by frequent lamp replacements.

By consuming as little as 8 watts, a reduction in CO2 emissions and a saving of over 80% in energy is achieved with LEDs when compared to 100W incandescent lamp fixture installations. As the RTO Series is designed to deliver more light to where it matters most, overall application efficiency is improved, thanks to the unique downward orientation of the LEDs, which prevents light spill unlike the typical jelly-jars. A further benefit is that LEDs are environment friendly due to the absence of hazardous materials like mercury, unlike fluorescent and HID lamps.

Backed by over three decades of solid state lighting business experience and produced in ISO certified manufacturing facilities, the RTO series provides a system efficacy of over 75 lm/w making it a leader in its product category.

The RTO series comes with various mounting options to facilitate pendant, ceiling or wall mounting and is available now through Dialight’s worldwide network of distributors.

Applied LED technology specialist, Dialight plc announced today that it is to be the lead sponsor of the 2009-10 Sustainable Cities Programme for the UK’s Commission for Architecture and the Built Environment, CABE.

CABE’s Sustainable Cities Programme cuts through the complexities of the climate change debate to provide expert advice, offer clear priorities for action and describe good practice in sustainable urban design and management. The resource www.sustainablecities.org.uk supports the people whose job it is to make decisions about how to plan, design and manage towns and cities. Dialight’s support enables CABE to extend its role with eight English core cities, working alongside teams of professionals at the cutting edge to support and learn from delivering new initiatives and improvements in the UK’s major urban areas.

Roy Burton, CEO Dialight said, “Dialight is committed to improving the quality of the built environment. We pride ourselves not only on adding value through the excellence of our technology, but also ensuring it is implemented to enhance the quality of the existing urban scene.

“Most traditional lighting solutions are wasteful. Lighting is often overlooked as a major contributor of carbon emissions, but globally it accounts for 20% of electricity consumption. Conversion to LED technology could reduce that by half. That’s a huge saving of CO2.”

Edward Hobson, Head of research at CABE said, “CABE sees climate change not as a threat but as an opportunity: an opportunity to improve the quality of our towns and cities. The challenge facing us is how to identify the best solutions across different disciplines to deliver prosperity, resilience and quality of life for people. We welcome Dialight’s participation in exploring the ways forward for the public and private sectors to deliver this shared ambition.”

Dialight’s new LED luminaire poised to save users $millions in energy and maintenance.
Introducing its LED High Bay fixture as the newest member of the SafeSite® series family of industrial and hazardous location LED lighting solutions, Dialight continues to deliver significant energy and maintenance savings versus conventional lighting technologies.

Farmingdale, NJ (July 23, 2009) - Applied LED technology specialist, Dialight Corporation, is set to introduce its first LED high bay luminaire which has been designed exclusively to replace conventional high bay lighting solutions in interior and exterior industrial, commercial and hazardous location applications.

Operating on just 150 watts, the powder-coated aluminum SafeSite® High Bay luminaire is designed to perform for 10+ years in even the most demanding applications - three times as long as traditional HID fixtures, and nearly twice as long as fluorescent solutions. Environmentally, the LED High Bay fixture is completely free of hazardous materials, including mercury, and boasts an annual energy savings that equates to over two metric tons of C02 saved per fixture per year. In a 1,000 fixture retrofit, that’s 347 cars off the road and over 19,000 mg of mercury saved annually!

Weighing in at less than fifteen pounds, half the weight of a conventional fixture, the SafeSite® High Bay’s low-profile housing is designed to pair seamlessly with a full range of mounting options offered by Dialight. Combined with a rugged solid-state design that makes the luminaire resistant to shock and vibration, users are presented with a high level of versatility and reliability matched by the luminaire’s superior ease of installation.

Case Study:

In a recent pilot installation with one of the largest commercial retailers in the United States, Dialight matched the lighting levels achieved by 1000+ T5 High Output fluorescent fixtures in a refrigerated distribution warehouse with just under 800 LED High Bay luminaires - about 25% fewer fixtures. Achieving this efficiency through the use of a combination of narrow and wide optics, the project is on track to generate combined annual energy, re-lamp and maintenance savings of over $345,000 with an expected payback period of 14 months.

This product is available now through Dialight’s worldwide network of distributors.

What's the big deal with LED traffic lights?

Someone asked me this the other day, so I'll share my answer as it involves some pretty impressive figures.

London has over 5000 traffic intersections, each one comprising an average of 10 traffic signals, making about 50,000 signals. If those were to be converted to LED lights, the resulting saving in electricity alone (assuming a cost of 6p per unit) turns out to be almost £1 million a year, with an annual reduction in carbon emissions of more than 9500 tonnes.

Presently, light bulbs in conventional traffic lights are changed every year, so as LEDs can be expected to last up to 10 years they would avoid up to 8 maintenance visits over their lifetime. That's a lot of cherrypickers out of work.

If you want all the technical details, someone's explained it here which saves me the trouble.

Now just think how many traffic hold ups you could miss if all traffic lights were LED. Of course, you could save even more energy, cut more carbon and reduce driver frustration too if you follow this example and just remove traffic lights altogether.

Ealing Council says "How many times have we waited at a junction and nothing is happening? No cars are moving, no pedestrians are crossing. Nothing. Just wasted time, adding to our frustrations. So we will bag over some traffic lights and allow motorists and pedestrians to trust each other." How refreshing! But they'd be better off with LEDs.

See us at Offshore Europe

We're getting ready for the first showing of our ATEX-approved SafeSite® LED fitting at Offshore Europe in Aberdeen, UK in September. This is a massive show with over 25,000 visitors expected, so we're hoping to see plenty of them on Dialight's stand 1647 in the Boyd Orr Building at the Aberdeen Exhibition and Conference Centre.

For show visitors from Europe we're planning to offer free trial installations of SafeSite, subject to site inspections, but numbers will be limited so any interested parties will need to get in touch with us early in the show. Watch out for us at stand 1647 and ask for Ian Duffy of Dialight as he's the one who'll be setting up the trials.
