With a global footprint spanning more than 150 countries, Kimberly-Clark’s Products have become a trusted part of life for some 1.3 billion people around the world. At its Family Care Production Facility, at Kluang, in Johor, Malaysia, the company manufactures a wide range of paper products including Kleenex facial tissues, and Scott paper towels, among others.

Aiming to reduce energy consumption and improve visibility within the plant, the company recently replaced 114 of its 400W metal halide lighting fixtures with Dialight’s DuroSite LED High Bays. Consuming just 123W, the Dialight High Bays have enabled the company to slash energy consumption and dramatically improve visibility, all while making the work environment more comfortable and safer for employees. The company has been so impressed with the results, it’s now considering an upgrade to Dialight fixtures at other areas within the mill premise.

Time for an Upgrade
When the Family Care Production Team began noticing low brightness on the manufacturing floor, the K-C engineering team set out to find newer technology to upgrade the existing lighting. One of the biggest contributing factors to the low quality of light, besides the rapid light depreciation natural to metal halide bulbs, was the degradation of the polycarbonate shields installed over each fixture. In the event a light bulb should burst in the overhead fixtures, the shields were designed to prevent a possible spark from igniting the tissue products on the manufacturing floor—a major safety concern. But over time, the shields had become faded and discolored, further reducing clarity under the metal halide lights. The shields were also prone to collecting insects, which further reduced effective light output on the shop floor. Poor visibility was especially an issue in the inspection areas, where low light conditions hindered the K-C Quality Assurance team’s efforts.

Furthermore, because of the region’s tropical climate, heat inside the facility was also a problem. The high-heat metal halide fixtures contributed significa ntly to this issue, which drove employees to switch off the lights to help keep the temperature down. But, with the long re-strike/warm-up times required for the lights to come back up to full output, this presented a significant safety concern.

Driven to Lead Sustainable Manufacturing Movement
In addition to visual acuity, the company also aimed to cut energy consumption. As one of the largest manufacturers in the world, K-C is committed to saving energy and optimizing efficiency worldwide—and serving as a leader in this movement throughout the Asia-Pacific region with its global Vision 2015 program. But, the Kluang facility’s current lighting efficacy was a paltry 12.49W per square meter (W/m2), mostly due to the fact that the lights were illuminating areas that were unnecessary, and they were often left burning when not needed to avoid the wait for restrike/warmup.

Dialight Outshines Local Competition
As the K-C team began evaluating options, they immediately looked to LED solutions, and even considered solar-powered products. Due to their location, they naturally evaluated products from local suppliers, including LED companies from Singapore and China. However, the North American-made Dialight High Bays offered better efficiency, shorter payback period and a longer lifespan backed by a full 5-year warranty, compared to just 2 years from the other suppliers.

The company’s global reputation and impressive list of customers were also determining factors. With the largest installed base of LED high bay fixtures in the world—more than 50,000 to date—Dialight’s experience gave K-C facility managers the confidence that product they’d chosen was already a trusted solution on a global scale.

The K-C team was also impressed with the 3D lighting simulation provided by Lumina Systems, the regional distributor of Dialight lighting products, which gave them a preview of the results before the fixtures were even ordered.

“With the lighting simulation, we could clearly see the optimum lighting layout for the space to be illuminated,” said Adam Lua Boon Chin, Project Engineer, Kimberly Clark Products. “We knew before installing that light would be directed exactly where we need it”

Energy, Maintenance Costs Shrink
With a 60 percent reduction in energy consumption, the K-C facility has been able to dramatically reduce its electricity costs. Now, lighting efficacy is at 4W/m2, less than a third of the wattage required with the metal halides units. And, because of the instant-on capability of the Dialight LEDs, K-C is also free to turn off the lights when they’re not needed, and can even strategically light only certain areas of the facility, such as alternating rows or only the perimeter, to save on energy use.

Because the Dialight products are expected to last up to a decade without ever needing a bulb change, K-C has also been able to reduce maintenance costs and demands at the facility. Changing bulbs in the existing metal halide fixtures not only interfered with production but also posed a safety hazard, as most of the lights were positioned above the manufacturing equipment. The Dialight fixtures virtually eliminate lighting maintenance, delivering improved quality of light while maintaining consistent light levels over their life.

And, since the lights themselves are fully enclosed and sealed to meet the HACCP and AIB food safety requirements, the risk of bursting bulbs is gone—as are the problematic spark shields. The lights are also much cooler, operating at less than 46°C, compared up to 232°C for the old metal halide units.

“Not only have the products performed exactly to our expectations, Dialight has provided us with thorough and professional support, which has also been very important for making this project a success,” said Chow Weng Leong, Engineering Manager at the facility.

UK-based at Southend-on-Sea and employing over 1,000 people, Olympus KeyMed is a wholly-owned subsidiary of Olympus Corporation, Japan. As such it is an important part of the global Olympus network, with specific responsibility for the development and manufacture of medical equipment and industrial products for distribution world-wide.

The lighting challenge
Olympus KeyMed’s Southend-on-Sea facility comprises warehousing and manufacturing with sheet metal as well as a paint shop. Here it not only produces medical and industrial products, but it is also the sole UK point of importation and distribution of all Olympus products. “Our target is to reduce CO2 emissions in the company by 50% by 2020 in both our buildings and our products,” explains Chris Owen, Olympus KeyMed’s Environmental & Improvement Engineer, “so that boosted our decision to change to a more energy efficient lighting solution. With over 100 metal halide high bay lights across our 3,380 square metre facility, we found that the 400W high bays were actually operating at 440W and accounting for 10% of our total energy usage.”

Chris also found that the metal halide high bays were lasting two years at best or 15,000 hours on average, though replacement cycles could be shorter as a result of heat generated and accumulation of dirt. Additionally there was the ongoing chore of inspecting for failed lights and servicing those that had failed.

The lighting solution
After researching the LED market, and with the recommendation of energy consultants Interior Control Ltd., Chris looked at LED technology specialist Dialight’s energy efficient lighting solutions. He was immediately attracted by their five-year continuous performance guarantee and very low wattage which would enable him to comfortably recoup all of his cost through energy savings made within the guarantee period.

“It’s a no-brainer,” he said, “as these lights will actually last much longer than the guarantee period; so as a real bonus we will have no maintenance chore, or cost, ever again – really excellent! It’s no wonder that the decision to purchase Dialight’s LED lighting flew past our executive committee. With Dialight’s 40 year LED experience and proven quality there was no other product which came close for price and durability.”

The outcome
Mounted at a height of 12 ms, the metal halide high bays were replaced one-for-one with Dialight DuroSite® 150W LED High Bays. Significantly this led to the discovery that the actual consumption of the LED High Bay lights including drivers was 5-10% less than the expected 150W – an additional energy saving bonus while maintaining the same light level but immediately reducing energy usage by over 68%. As a result, Olympus is now on target to cut carbon emissions by 85 tonnes per year.

In the manufacturing side of the business the lighting runs 24 hours/5.5 days a week, while in logistics it runs 14 hours/5 days a week and Chris Owen is already considering introducing PIRs/Lux sensor control in both to deliver further energy and carbon reductions. He is also working hard with Interior Control Ltd to install Dialight’s LEDs on the exterior of the building both in the car park and pathways, as with PIR control these can also have excellent pay back periods of less than 4 years.

Re-strike time had been an issue in all areas with the metal halide lights, especially in the inspection area, so low level fluorescents had been installed as back–up to avoid production downtime. With the instant-on ability of the LED High Bays these back-up lights can now be taken out. Chris is particularly pleased to note that the addition of some extra LED high bays in the inspection area has delivered a massive improvement and increased the lux level from 1,800 to a mighty 5,000.

Environmental protection has always been of prominent importance to the Munich-based, worldwide reknowned Paulaner Brewery Group. Its well-proven environmental management system documents according to DIN ISO 14001 how the eco-balance is being permanently improved and makes the measures visible. Every year objectives and projects to reduce energy and water consumption are defined. Although lighting only contributes a smaller portion to the overall energy consumption of the Paulaner Group, it strives for reducing CO2 emission in that area and increasingly relies on the use of energy efficient LED lighting fixtures.

The current project
The 8 m high and 120 m long covered truck driveway had been equipped with 14 downlight fixtures for 400W HID lamps with an on-time of approximately 2000 hours per year. The department manager for electrical equipment, Harald Zeiller, describes the issue: “We could not switch the fixtures on and off on demand since the metal halide lamps need to cool down for approximately ten minutes before you can turn them on again. And then it takes almost the same amount of time until they have regained their full intensity. Furthermore, the maintenance costs haven’t been insignificant.” They looked for a powerful, energy-saving and low maintenance lighting system that in addition increases the quality of light in the driveway and thereby the safety for pedestrians.

The Dialight LED High Bay as problem solver
Mr. Zeiller opted for the LED High Bay fixtures from Dialight. “Besides the mere technical data and the saving potential I was especially impressed by the five year manufacturer warranty,” he says. “Also important to me were the easy mounting and the special design of the cooling fins which makes it very unlikely that the inevitable deposit of diesel exhaust particulate will significantly compromise the cooling function.”

Impressive energy savings
The LED High Bay fixtures have been combined with a newly installed EIB bus system and are switched on and off in groups controlled by a light sensor. This results in further 30% energy saving, in addition to the already greatly reduced system power consumption of 2.4 kW compared to the former 6.2 kW, which has been realised solely by switching to LED technology. Thus a further contribution to achieving the environmental goals for 2011 has been made.

Increased safety by improved lighting
“The new light is of a completely different quality, it provides better contrast and is more brilliant”, Mr. Zeiller comments. And to increase the safety for the pedestrians walking through the driveway he has even invested in two more fixtures.

Altogether the team at Paulaner is very satisfied with the new LED lighting and also with the cooperation with Dialight. Harald Zeiller: ”From sampling to shipping everything went quickly and hassle-free, and if the quality furthermore holds what Dialight promises, there is by all means an opportunity for further installations.”

Case Study: How LED Lighting Delivered Multiple Benefits for Barcelona Metal Processing Plant

Spanish manufacturing company Martisa is based in Barcelona where it produces metal parts for the automotive industry.

The lighting challenge

With the metal processing machinery pumping so much energy, the 32x400W high pressure sodium (HPS) lights in the 1288 sqm Martisa facility were subject to frequent dimming and flickering, so the management were looking for a more robust lighting solution. The performance instability of the HPS was also generating irregular colour rendition areas varying between 118 and 270 lux at floor level.

Further problems arose when the lights took ten minutes to re-strike following power outages. Maintenance was also an issue, as the HPS lights were mounted at a height of 9 metres, ran ten hours a day, five days a week and had to be replaced every 10,000 hours, each at a unit replacement cost of €50 plus the use of a mobile elevation platform that cost €100 per day.

The solution

Martisa’s energy consultant (Area Energetica, a lighting consulting partner of INELEC distributor) recommended a lighting solution by specialist LED lighting manufacturer Dialight that could meet all of these challenges as well as delivering substantial energy savings. In order to minimise project cost they chose to replace the 400W HPS lights on a one-for-one basis with Dialight’s highly robust 150W DuroSite® LED High Bays.

The result

Martisa is now enjoying the immediate benefits of 69% reduction in lighting energy use and reduced carbon emissions from solid-state LED High Bays that suffer no flickering or dimming effect from the amount of energy being pumped by the machinery. The lux level is now steady at 200 at floor level, giving improved and consistent colour rendition, while the LEDs’ instant-on ability means that there is no re-strike delay following power outages. Carrying a 5-year continuous performance warranty and with an expected lifetime of 60,000 hours, the LED lighting has also greatly reduced the maintenance burden and cost.

Mr. Santi Martínez, the manager of Martisa, commented: “Replacing the HPS with Dialight’s LED High Bays has eliminated the annoying flickering issue caused by the energy consumption of the machines and we now have the added benefit of instant on/off switching that allows more efficient lighting management by reducing the re-strike time. Our staff now works with a better sense of comfort due to the removal of the lighting fluctuation and we’re getting overall homogeneous lighting with improved colour rendition across the entire warehouse. The reduction of energy consumption and maintenance fees represent a huge and direct economic saving for the company that also represents significant value.”

The Dialight product is the first of its kind to achieve FAA certification and Dialight is now the first ever to offer a complete line of all LED-based FAA-certified aircraft obstruction lighting.

As the first installation of a FAA certified, all LED high-intensity strobe system in the world, the Vigilant Series L-856 will be installed on a 1,200 foot C-4 communications tower operated by a public television network. Historic Missouri City Takes Progressive Approach to Lighting with Dialight’s StreetSense™ Series LED Street Lights

Home to the world’s only inland cape, Cape Girardeau, Missouri has played a significant role in the discovery and settlement of the American west. Founded more than 200 years ago along the Mississippi River, the city has evolved from a tiny trading post to a thriving culturally-rich community of 37,000 residents.

Recently, city officials in “the Cape” embarked on an upgrade to its municipal lighting, replacing 104 high-pressure sodium street lights with Dialight’s new StreetSense™ LED street lights. The result is not only improved visibility for motorists in the high-traffic area but also significant reduction in the maintenance needs and energy costs, all funded by the Department of Energy’s Energy Efficiency & Conservation Block Grant (EECBG).

The Missouri Highway 74 corridor through downtown Cape Girardeau is one of the busiest thoroughfares in the city, leading up to the Emerson Memorial Bridge across the mighty Mississippi and connecting the Cape with Illinois. Along this stretch of road, as well as North Kingshighway, more than a hundred 250W high-pressure sodium street lights kept maintenance crews perpetually busy with frequent bulb changes.

“Each is equipped with a photocell, which means we’d have to send a crew out to scout for burn-outs each night, an overtime expense that we’d prefer to avoid,” said Geoff Dial, Special Projects Coordinator in the Public Works Department in Cape Girardeau. “The ballasts were getting to be around five to seven years old, and lately it seemed as though the lights were going out more frequently than ever before. Almost every day we had one burn out, despite our efforts to keep up with the changes.”

As part of an overall plan to achieve more sustainable operations, officials in Cape secured a $190,000 grant to make energy-efficiency improvements to city-owned facilities. Part of the funding received through the EECBG was designated to replace 104 streetlights with new high-efficiency, low-maintenance LED street lights that would save the city money and free up precious resources to attend to other, more pressing issues besides changing light bulbs.

Having already replaced traffic signals in 21 intersections and rail signals in one railroad crossing with Dialight’s LED signals, the city looked to the leading innovator in LED technology to once again meet its needs. The EECBG grant mandated that all equipment purchased must comply with the Buy American requirement of the American Recovery & Reinvestment Act. Not only did the Dialight StreetSense fixtures meet Cape Girardeau’s technological and performance needs, but they are also made entirely at its Roxboro, NC manufacturing facility, satisfying the Buy American requirement.

Working with Brown Traffic, a Dialight authorized distributor in Davenport, IA, the city has now replaced 104 of its 250W HPS lights with the much more efficient 120W Dialight LED units along Highway 74 and North Kingshighway. With an output of 9,000 lumens (73 lm/w) and a CRI of 72 with 6000k cool white light, the new StreetSense LED lights provide outstanding illumination with a light that is easier on the eyes for motorists.

“The changeout to the Dialight units was extremely fast and easy for our crews,” Dial said. “I personally witnessed them replace one in less than 10 minutes from the time they stepped into the bucket truck to getting back onto the ground. Because I know these new lights will last for at least 15 years, I’m looking forward to not having to touch these LED fixtures for a long time.”

In addition to the maintenance savings, Dial estimates that the new LED units will slash the city’s energy consumption by nearly 70,000 KWH, from about 160,000 KWH to just 89,000 KWH, which will help offset future increases in energy costs, a factor that the city council in Cape Girardeau has found very enticing. The first 104 units installed represent about one-fourth of the street lighting under the city’s charge, and Dial says he frequently fields calls from residents who complain about burned out lights in other areas.

With a new casino planned for the north end of town, Dial says the new lighting also offers a much more welcoming environment for the anticipated influx of tourists expected in Cape.

“We are continually reviewing ways to conserve energy and resources throughout the city,” Dial said. “The Dialight LED street lights offered us the energy savings and long life we require to ensure a safer and more hospitable environment for residents and visitors.”

Dialight Japan KK has today signed agreements to acquire the assets and contracts of its Japanese distributor, I-Spec Ltd for an upfront consideration of £0.2m and a 25% stake in Dialight Japan KK. All employees of I-Spec will transfer to Dialight Japan KK with additional consideration due to the shareholder employees over the next five years based on the future profitability of the new company. The transaction is expected to complete on the transference of contracts at the end of June.

Dialight Japan KK is based in Hamamatsu in the industrial heartland of central Japan. The industrial and hazardous lighting segment is highly regulated and there are in excess of 50,000 industrial facilities in Japan making this one of the world’s largest industrial / hazardous lighting markets.

Dialight Celebrates Summer Tradition with Corporate Wiffle Ball League

Paying homage to a local summer sports tradition, employees at local LED lighting company Dialight have kicked off the summer with a co-ed inter-office wiffle ball league, complete with full stats, major-league-style trading, official rule book and an elaborate summer-long schedule that includes a Home Run Derby Week during the Fourth of July.

Games are played behind Dialight’s Farmingdale corporate offices every Friday at lunchtime. Typical of the technical prowess of the Dialight staff, organizers even used aerial satellite imagery of the office grounds to delineate foul, single hit and homerun territory.

Thirty-six employees are participating, including an executive management team, The Chiefs, that so far shares the lead at 2-0 with the Light Rays. The Wiffle-Brawlers are 1-1, while the Wiffle of Doom and Whiff This!!! have yet to post in the win column.

“Wiffle ball is a Jersey Shore tradition and I’ve been playing since I was four,” said Dialight’s Director of Marketing Michael Schratz. “The league has been a great way for us to blow off steam and have fun, but it’s been a great team-building exercise, too.”

The league has definitely sparked some inter-office competition, and even a little good-natured teasing between colleagues for their performance—or lack thereof—on the field. But, the players insist that it’s all in good fun.

“The games have become the talk of the office, and a great morale booster for everyone in the company,” said Dialight product manager Anthony Russo who helped to organize the league.

“We’ve even managed to convince the management to get on board, which makes things a little interesting. It makes you wonder if they’ll remember that you struck them out when it comes time for your performance review,” Russo quipped.

Regular season play in the Dialight league continues through August 12 with playoffs throughout the fall winding down to a 3-game final round that ends October 14.

Century Aluminum Saves Thousands on Annual Maintenance and Energy Costs with Upgrade to Dialight Vigilant™ Series LED Obstruction Lights

With an operating capacity of 244,000 tonnes per year, Century Aluminum’s Hawesville, KY primary aluminum smelter has been in operation since 1969. The original 400-foot chimney stack featured an incandescent beacon lighting system installed in the 1970s. Looking to upgrade its antiquated technology, the company replaced its vintage beacons with a new, high-efficiency Dialight Vigilant Series L-864 LED red beacon system to gain incredible savings in energy consumption and cost and dramatically cut maintenance expenses.

Antiquated System Saps Maintenance, Operating Budget

The 42-year-old Century Aluminum chimney stack had become a drain on the company’s energy and financial resources. With two sets of four 1400W incandescent beacons and two sets of four 116W sidelights (total of 16 units) operating night and day, the company was spending about $6,000 annually just to keep the lights on. In addition to the operational costs, maintenance was becoming a burden, requiring a minimum of two bulb replacements per year for each of the dozen beacons to safeguard against failure.

With the cost to mobilize a tower-climb team at about $1,800 for each outing, plus at least $80 for each bulb, maintenance costs racked up to nearly $4,000 a year— valuable capital that could be put to better use in the company. In the event of a bulb failure, NOTEM filings and FAA fines could easily push the cost liability into the tens of thousands of dollars.

Dialight Delivers Fast ROI

At the recommendation of Jason Jennett, obstruction lighting engineer with Fuellgraf Chimney & Tower, a leading tower and stack lighting specialist, Century chose Dialight’s ultra-high efficiency, low-maintenance and low-profile Vigilant Series LED beacon system to upgrade its tower lighting. “We calculated an ROI for them that showed these units would pay for themselves in less than 1 year and even a ROI of just over 4 years based on a complete new lighting system including new conduit, cabling and all necessary installation.”

Fuellgraf installed a complete new system consisting of four red L-864 20W LED Dialight beacons on both the top and mid-levels and four steady-burning L-810 red RTO 6.5W LED marker lights between the top and mid-levels and on the bottom. New conduit, cable supports and junction boxes completed the upgrade. The fact that the new units weigh just 20 pounds—one-fourth the size of the incandescents—and the ability to jump straight into the terminal block off the LED beacon without the added terminal block required for traditional beacons, made for easier installation. And, the lower profile design reduces wind load on the units and the tower.

Direct Bottom-Line Savings

The new beacons reduce operating expenses because they consume less than 10% of the power required for the incandescent units, providing a direct positive impact on the company’s bottom line.

Farmingdale, NJ (March 30th, 2011) – Dialight (LSE: DIA.L), an innovative global leader in LED lighting technology, announced today that its newest Vigilant™ Series CL-864 / L-864 LED Red Obstruction Beacon, has been qualified through rigorous testing by NAV CANADA, the country’s civil air navigation services provider, for its ultra-low electromagnetic interference (EMI) in communication tower applications.

“We put Dialight’s LED beacon through testing and it performed perfectly. There was no EMI interference detected," NAV CANADA’s test results reported.

The Dialight LED medium intensity beacon has now been added to the approved product/vendor list for NAV CANADA through the company’s distribution partner RVA Lighting and Masts in Toronto, which supplied the units for testing.

EMI (Electro-Magnetic Interference), also known as RFI (Radio Frequency Interference) I, is a disturbance often emitted by high voltage electrical circuits that can interrupt, obstruct or degrade sensitive radio communications, particularly those employed by air traffic control and aeronautical communications services. Beacon lighting is required by the Federal Aviation Administration and Transport Canada on communications towers to alert pilots of their presence, but the presence of EMI can actually interfere with communications signals passing through the tower’s antenna. Beacons can be responsible for the dropped calls that many cellular telephone users experience.

To thwart this interference, Dialight’s energy efficient Vigilant Series LED beacon uses passive low voltage LEDs that operate at just 20W, compared to traditional incandescent beacons at 1400W. The LED beacon is certified to the FCC’s EMC #47CFR, Part 15:2008, Class A standard for its minimal EMI emission.

Night Vision Goggles (NVGs) and Aviator's Night Vision Imaging System (ANVIS) often employ Class A, B, and C filters to block cockpit lighting from saturating the imaging system. It is possible that these filters can sometimes reduce the LED sources that emit light in the visible spectrum. The Vigilant Series overcomes this obstacle by combining visible red LEDs and IR LEDs in a single unit.

In January 2010 Dialight’s Agent, Ocip Energy Ltd, approached the ExCeL London management team with a view to utilising LED lighting products to both reduce energy consumption and to see how they could improve their lighting in order to achieve uniformity throughout the central boulevard of the exhibition and conference centre. At almost half a mile in length this is the main thoroughfare and public space used by all events. The solution that ExCeL chose for this critical space not only improved the light quality, but reduced operating and maintenance costs while also improving energy efficiency.

The lighting challenge

Engineering and Energy Manager, Chris Barnes explains how the need for improved lighting came about: “During the Phase Two expansion of ExCeL we used ETFE roofing above the new section of the central boulevard to allow us to harvest a lot of daylight. The Phase One section was still lit by 400W high pressure sodium lamps which produce variable colour rendering as they age, so it looked dark by comparison. We specifically wanted to improve the lighting so that visitors could flow through the two areas without noticing a big difference in lighting conditions. Lighting is a key part of the user experience of this building and, as we couldn’t cut holes in the roof of the old section to let in daylight, it had to be an internal solution to matching the light quality.”

Additionally the ExCeL management team wanted to meet energy efficiency targets as part of their award-winning policy to continuously evolve and implement practices that deliver economic security, social and environmental benefits. A key part of this policy is to put a sustainable business strategy in place for lighting and other essential elements of its direct in-house operations.

How the challenge was overcome with LED lighting

Working closely with Ocip Energy Ltd management team and Dialight’s engineers, ExCeL London agreed to a trial of eight DuroSite™ Series LED High Bay lights from applied LED technology specialist Dialight. The 150W LED High Bays were used to replace 400W sodium lamps on a one-for-one basis and delivered more than double the lighting level taking the measured lux from 100 to 220. On the basis of this result the installation was extended to a total of 194 LED High Bay lights throughout the central boulevard.

Chris Barnes had trialled other LED lights and says: “Dialight’s High Bay suits the purpose for the building; it looks nice, it’s aesthetically pleasing, it ticks all the boxes. For example, the boulevard is a public area and when there’s a power cut the HPS can take 2-3 minutes to come back on, whereas the LED is back on instantly. Our events managers noticed that and they like it, so now there’s a push to get more LEDs installed.”

As part of a city-wide sustainability initiative, officials in Centennial, Colorado recently completed a project to upgrade each of the city’s traffic and pedestrian countdown signals from traditional incandescent units to Dialight’s high-efficiency, low-maintenance ITE-compliant LED traffic signals. The project, funded by the U.S. Department of Energy’s Energy Efficiency and Conservation Block Grant Program (EECBG), not only improved visibility for drivers and pedestrians, but is expected to save the city $50,000-$60,000 a year in energy and maintenance costs.

Farmingdale, NJ (November 30, 2010)—The U.S. Department of Energy has closed a controversial loophole in the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 (ARRA) and is now mandating that all stimulus-funded LED traffic signal projects across the country use U.S.-made equipment. The move positions Dialight (LSE: DIA.L), the global leader in LED lighting technology, as the only qualified supplier of U.S.-manufactured, fully-compliant LED traffic signal modules to meet the Buy American mandate.

The contentious waiver of the Buy American provision had previously allowed contracts for LED traffic signals to be awarded to foreign suppliers, effectively sending U.S. stimulus dollars and manufacturing jobs overseas. In response, Dialight has recently scaled up to meet increasing demand for its ultra energy-efficient and low-maintenance LED traffic signals, investing some $2 million and adding more than 80 jobs over the last two years.

In addition to its long life, the Vigilant L-866/L-885 is the most energy-efficient catenary strobe on the market, consuming just 120 watts per unit to produce 20,000 candela (cd) on white for daytime operation, and just 20 watts for 2,000 cd on white nighttime operation. Red nighttime operation draws just 45 watts to deliver 2,000 cd.

Ideal for use in naturalized areas where light pollution is a concern, the Vigilant L-866/L-885 leverages Dialight’s precision optics to delivering optimum visibility at altitude for small planes and helicopters, with minimal light scatter above and below.

City Leverages $100,000 Federal Highways Grant to Install 132 New Countdown Timers to Meet New MUTCD Requirements

Farmingdale, NJ (DATE) – Dialight (LSE: DIA.L), an innovative global leader in LED lighting technology, announced today that the city of Spokane, Washington has completed the installation of 132 of the company’s ITE-compliant LED pedestrian countdown timers to improve crosswalk safety and comply with the latest requirements in the U.S. Dept. of Transportation Federal Highways Administration’s Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD).

To complete the project, the city took advantage of a $100,000 Federal Highways Safety Grant to pay for the signals and the installation along Third Avenue from Division to Maple Streets, and at Second and Fourth Avenues on Maple and Walnut Streets.

“The timers will effectively improve pedestrian safety along this corridor, which was identified for the upgrade based on historical data on pedestrian and vehicle collisions from the State Department of Transportation,” said Katherine Miller, capital program manager for the city of Spokane. “The new signals are highly visible, and we were quite pleased with Dialight’s quick delivery of the product and ease of installation.”

The December 2009 revised MUTCD released by the Federal Highway Administration requires the use of countdown pedestrian signals at all new installations with a pedestrian clearance interval of ≥7 seconds. While the MUTCD did not require the retrofit of existing pedestrian signals, it does require the conversion to countdown pedestrian signals on the next scheduled replacement of the signal. To achieve early compliance, the city took advantage of the opportunity to use stimulus funds to improve intersection safety for pedestrians and bicyclists.

The facility will now produce environmentally friendly LED lighting and signaling solutions. This has effectively repatriated more than fifty production jobs and spurred more than $1 million in facility upgrades and investments to make Dialight’s Roxboro plant one of the only LED lighting technology manufacturing facilities of its kind in the U.S.

Dialight has invested in new equipment, bringing state-of-the-art molding equipment, vacuum metalizing, CNC machining and a one-of-a-kind hard coating clean room specifically designed for the manufacturing of LED traffic lighting products at their Roxboro facility. Quality from the Ground Up

As the market leader in producing and supplying dry mustard products since 1867, G.S. Dunn has built a worldwide reputation for delivering the finest dry milled mustard products to some of the most notable names in the food industry. To ensure uncompromising quality, the company’s stringent quality inspection process requires adequate lighting for optimum visibility.

To achieve the visibility needed, the company had installed 18 powerful 450-watt fixtures in the inspection facility, with each actually consuming somewhere around 540 watts of energy to run the light and the ballast. Versions of these high specification luminaires are also produced for more general commercial, industrial and outdoor situations.

Signals/Illumination

The Board is pleased to report another good performance by the Signals/Illumination segment which is showing a strong revenue increase over the first half of 2009.

Highlights of the trading performance include:

European traffic has made a strong start to the year with significant gains in the UK market.
Sales of White lighting products into the Industrial Market have continued strongly and show good growth . Sales of the new High Bay Light in particular are very promising as our customers recognise the significant savings that our lights provide.
Shipments of White Strobe Obstruction Lights are increasing as we make deliveries against the contracts secured in 2009.
Re-engineering of products in line with new LED technologies continues to drive improvement in margins.

Components

The Indication market continues to strengthen and is running at a level close to normal although it is possible some of this recovery is due to restocking. We are therefore cautious as to the prospects for the remainder of the year.

Shipments of electromagnetic components for smart metering applications continue to meet our expectations based on contracts previously secured. In the medium term, substantial growth in this product area could be anticipated, however, the timing of future business is hard to predict and margins are tight.

Acquisition

On 28 April 2010 we announced the acquisition of BTI Light Systems A/S (“BTI”), a Danish company offering signaling and safety equipment for the wind, marine and airport industries. BTI’s established channels and customer relationships are complementary to Dialight’s existing US wind turbine business. This acquisition fits well into Dialight’s strategy of targeting protected, niche sectors within the lighting industry where LED technology can be applied with economic benefits.

Operating out of Copenhagen, BTI’s product portfolio comprises obstruction lighting and aids to navigation for both onshore and offshore wind turbines and airports The acquisition is expected to be earnings accretive in 2010.

Cashflow

The Group maintains a strong balance sheet and cash generation is in line with expectations.

BTI is being acquired from its management for a total consideration of DKK 26m (£3.0m), DKK 18m (£2.1m) of which is payable in cash with the remainder in Dialight shares.

Operating out of Copenhagen, BTI's product portfolio comprises obstruction lighting and aids to navigation for both onshore and offshore wind turbines and airports. In its most recent audited accounts for the year to 30 September 2009, BTI reported revenues of DKK 32.1m (£3.7m), an EBIT of DKK 3.8m (£0.45m), a profit after tax of DKK 2.8m (£ 0.3m) and gross assets of DKK 15.2m (£1.8 m). The acquisition is expected to be earnings accretive in 2010. The Chief Executive of BTI, Mr. Max Hansen, will remain with the business for a period of at least two years.

To satisfy the share based element of the consideration, application has been made to the UK Listing Authority and the London Stock Exchange for 360,730 ordinary shares of 1.89p each to be admitted to the Official List and to trading on the Main Market of the London Stock Exchange.

These shares rank pari passu with the existing issued shares of the Company and dealings are expected to commence on 4 May 2010. Following admission, the Company will have 31,600,231 ordinary shares in issue.

This recognition attributes to the StreetSENSE luminaire’s energy efficiency and lighting efficacy for roadway lighting applications.

The DLC’s Qualified Products List serves as a resource guide for program administrators to determine which lighting products meet established energy efficiency guidelines currently not addressed in the US Department of Energy’s Energy Star program. The goal is to ensure that high-quality, energy-efficient lighting design becomes commonplace in all lighting installations. The program is operated by the Northeast Energy Efficiency Partnership and sponsored by numerous utility companies, energy research and public service organizations.

Designed for use in hazardous location applications, Dialight’s SafeSite™ Series LED Bulkhead fitting now has certification for Zones 1 and 21. This LED fitting is designed to replace existing high pressure sodium (HPS), metal halide, incandescent and fluorescent fittings.

Newmarket, UK (21 April 2010) – Dialight (LSE: DIA.L), an innovative global leader in LED lighting technology, today announced that it is now offering its SafeSite™ Series LED Bulkhead luminaire with ATEX certification for Zones 1 and 21. As well as complying with ATEX Directive 94/9/EC, which is obligatory for any equipment intended for use in potentially explosive atmospheres, the product carries “CE” marking as per the European Union Directive, so this certification opens up an important market extension for Dialight.

The advanced LED technology used in the Bulkhead luminaire will deliver 50,000 hours of operation and high performance in a wide variety of applications, radically reducing lighting maintenance needs in comparison to conventional solutions such as HPS and fluorescent lighting. Its compact design makes it highly suitable for stairwells, platforms, exits, walkways, tunnels, subways and other confined or hard-to-access spaces.

Available in 11w and 22w versions and delivering 73 lumens/watt, the Bulkhead LED fitting offers low power consumption and is rated for input voltage of 100-277VAC, 50/60Hz. With instant on/off ability it can also achieve greater efficiency by switching off when not needed, which gives it a lifespan of 10+ years in even the most demanding applications – that’s three times as long as traditional HID fittings and nearly twice as long as fluorescent solutions. Dialight participated in the 6.5 mile Belmar, NJ MS Walk on Sunday, April 18th, with a team of employees, family and friends. Dialight also sponsored one of the rest stops along the route, which provided refreshments to those participating in the walk. The Belmar walk site is the largest in New Jersey, with over two thousand participants and volunteers.

Multiple sclerosis (or MS) is a chronic, often disabling disease that attacks the central nervous system (CNS), which is made up of the brain, spinal cord, and optic nerves. Symptoms may be mild, such as numbness in the limbs, or severe, such as paralysis or loss of vision. The progress, severity, and specific symptoms of MS are unpredictable and vary from one person to another. Today, new treatments and advances in research are giving new hope to people affected by the disease. The National Multiple Sclerosis Society will use funds collected from the MS Walk to not only support research for a cure tomorrow, but also to provide programs which address the needs of people living with MS today. Because we choose to walk for those who sometimes can't, because we choose to donate to the MS Walk, we are getting closer to the hour when no one will have to hear the words, "You have MS."

The 20-minute workshop will provide a brief overview of LED, or light-emitting diode, technology and how this low-maintenance, energy-efficient lighting solution can be used successfully in commercial and industrial settings, such as manufacturing facilities, warehouses and even hazardous locations.

Dialight collects industry award from ‘Big’ Jack Charlton

Newmarket based LED lighting manufacturer Dialight was presented with a gold award last week by English football legend Jack Charlton. The award was accepted by the company's European Sales & Marketing Director, Jim Gracie, at the HazardEx exhibition in Harrogate. Dialight won the top prize for its LED lighting products in the category 'User Application' by demonstrating how LED lighting is delivering a massive 75% energy saving for one of its major industrial customers, Henkel, manufacturer of Loctite.

Jim Gracie commented, “Not only will our LED lights help Henkel to reduce its carbon emissions, these lights will last for ten years or more and produce almost no light pollution, so in addition to the energy saving they bring even more benefits that can be enjoyed by any business application.”

With 150 working in its Newmarket facility, Dialight is a long term employer in the town.
